Manatí del Caribe: Sirenians of the world
Antillean manatee / Karibik-Manati / Trichechus manatus
Conservation status: EN - Endangered
This large animal is surprisingly agile in the water. They can do spins, pirouettes, jumps and even swim with their backs down. Their skin is finely wrinkled and usually covered with algae and small molluscs.
The Caribbean manatee is sensitive to cold, being restricted to living in waters with temperatures above 20°C. They inhabit coastal (estuarine) and fresh waters of the tropics and subtropics, as well as marsh systems.
One of the most common threats to these large animals is the drying up of marshes for crop irrigation purposes, forcing them to be moved to other locations or, in the worst cases, slaughtered for consumption. In the Sinú, Magdalena and San Jorge rivers, manatees are susceptible to hunting by fishermen. In Orinoquia, the highest cases of mortality occur in nets, especially in hatchlings and calves.1 WL bracelet = 5m² of tropical rainforest
